Training classes have arrived at Shield Kennels!

Puppy Preschool - $100
Puppy Preschool is an excellent starting class for young puppies, at 10 to 14 weeks of age. Some minor basic obedience skills will be introduced, but with a heavy emphasis on puppy socialization, confidence-building, crate exercises, and more. We will cover very basic house manners, like walking on a loose leash, socialization, coming when called, and age-appropriate play. Handlers learn to develop a positive relationship with their dog, leadership skills and responsible dog ownership. This class meets for 1 hour per week for 4 weeks.
** We take your puppy’s health and safety very seriously, which is why our training rooms will be specially sanitized before class begins. This will be a safe environment for puppies as young as 10 weeks old! (This is the first class of the day to ensure the cleanest and most sanitized facilities.)

Puppy Kindergarten (Level 1) - $130
Young puppies are very impressionable, and their earliest experiences can have lasting effects on their behavior. This six-week class is designed to help puppies grow into well-adjusted dogs. We’ll give you the tools to create a strong foundation of good behavior while focusing on socialization skills, good manners, and confidence-building for a well-balanced family member. Basic commands like “sit,” “come” and “down” are taught, in addition to skill development in loose leash walking, release, impulse control, come, going to a mat or place, body handling, and handler focus. This class is open to puppies under six months of age once they have had their second round of vaccinations (generally 12 weeks of age). This class will meet for 1 hour for 6 weeks.

AKC Puppy Star Program - $150 (AKC Registered or AKC PAL Registered puppies)
A new American Kennel Club® (AKC) training program geared towards puppies and their owners. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program rewards responsible owners who take the time to train and socialize their new puppies. The program is a natural precursor to the AKC Canine Good Citizen® Test. “S.T.A.R.” stands for Socialization, Training, Activity and a Responsible owner, all of the things a puppy needs to have a good life. This class will meet for 1 hour for 6 weeks.

Adult Basics (Level 1) - $150
Your dog may no longer be a puppy, but that doesn’t mean their training days are over. This six-week class provides an opportunity to continue developing fundamental skills and good habits, also perfect for recent adult dog rescues. We will help your dog understand your expectations, so you can both enjoy your life together. This class is open to dogs six months of age and older. Basic commands like “sit,” “come” and “down” are taught, in addition to skill development in loose leash walking, release, impulse control, come, going to a mat or place, body handling, and handler focus. This class may be repeated to build the dog’s skills before moving on to more advanced classes. This class will meet for 1 hour for 6 weeks.

Intermediate (Level 2) - $150
Once your dog has completed our Puppy or Adult dog course, it is crucial to apply those skills in real-life scenarios. The Intermediate class will build upon everything we learned in the puppy class or the adult class and set them up for success out in the town! This class is open to dogs over 6 months of age and is a prerequisite for our Canine Good Citizen course. This class will be completed in different areas, such as parks and dog-friendly stores and areas. This class will meet for 1 hour for 6 weeks.

Advanced & Canine Good Citizen (Level 3) - $150
Our Canine Good citizen class will include learning the ten steps of the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. The Canine Good Citizen is a program that promotes responsible dog ownership and encourages the training of well-mannered dogs. To sign up for this course, you must have completed our Basics and Advanced levels or classes equivalent to a different trainer. This class will meet for 1 hour for 6 weeks. The cost of the AKC CGC Evaluation is optional and an additional $25.

*** Litter mates and housemates: If you have litter mates or dogs that have bonded, we strongly recommend that you enroll them in separate classes and train them separately. They tend to be highly distracting to each other when they are in the same class.
Classes will need at least 5 dogs per class up to max of 10 dogs.

*** Due to the social environment, we will not allow aggressive traits in the classes. ***

What to bring:
- Your puppy who's a little hungry and had a potty break before classes.
- Flat buckle collar, martingale collar, front-attaching or body harness. Please no prong collars or head halter collars.
- Dogs must have one adult per pet present. Kids are welcome, as long as they have an adult present!
- 6-foot nylon or leather leash. Please no flexi/retractable leashes.
- Treat pouch. A fanny pack, climber’s chalk bag, or hardware apron will work well too!
- Treats! At least two cups of pea-sized delicious treats. Your treats need to outcompete the environment, so hot dogs, ham and cheese, freeze dried salmon or liver will all work well.
- Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations and be on a flea and tick preventive.

Optional:
- A Bed/mat for your puppy/dog to rest on between exercises.
- A chew or stuffed Kong for your puppy to chew during downtimes.

We will have items to purchase if needed.
