Shield Kennels gives a 3 year guarantee against life-threatening congenital defects, and genetic health problems that would prevent him/her from living an otherwise normal and healthy life, along with elbow and hip dysplasia of mild or below on the puppy. Shield Kennels reserves the right to consult a licensed veterinarian of our choosing for a second opinion to confirm findings and eligibility for the health guarantee. The puppy or dog is already a part of the family at this point so if this should occur the owner will have the choice of keeping the puppy at their cost or return the puppy to Shield Kennels. The puppy does not need to be returned to get the replacement puppy. The buyer will receive another puppy when there is one available or when the buyers are ready for another puppy within 8 years of the birth of the original puppy. If, by chance Shield Kennels stops breeding GSDs or Icelandic Sheepdogs, everyone on the list will be notified for a replacement and breeding would take place for the replacements.

The puppy is guaranteed to be in good health at the time of sale. Any known health issues will be discussed with new owner before puppy goes home and will be agreed upon. The puppy will be vet checked at least once and a copy of visit will be given to the new puppy owner. The puppy will be up-to-date on shots and dewormed at the time of pick-up. It is very important that you continue vaccinations and dewormings. Please do not expose your puppy to other dogs that are not vaccinated until he/she has completed the entire vaccination schedule - around 16 weeks to 20 weeks old. Puppy will have at least 1 set of vaccinations before going to their new home. Their shot records will be provided to the new owners upon pick-up.

The buyer, at their own expense, should have the puppy examined by a licensed veterinarian within 72 hours of receiving the puppy. If within 72 hours, a licensed veterinarian finds the puppy to be unhealthy or unfit for sale, the puppy must be returned for a full refund or exchanged for another puppy when one is available - provided the puppy has not been injured or neglected. The veterinarian must provide a written statement deeming the puppy unhealthy for purchase. Shield Kennels reserves the right to consult a licensed veterinarian of our choosing for a second opinion to confirm findings and return/exchange eligibility. This guarantee does not cover any health issues caused by neglect or injury from the buyer. If the puppy is euthanized or death of puppy is not known, a necropsy is required be done at buyer's expense. If not completed, the puppy will not be replaced.

This guarantee does not include minor illnesses and health issues such as colds, allergies, internal or external parasites (for example giardia and coccidia), dermatology or umbilical hernias. However, the breeder will disclose any known illnesses or health issues prior to the sale.

Shield Kennels cannot assume responsibility for this puppy after 72 hours of the sale. It is the responsibility of the buyer to care for the puppy properly and keep it free from harm. Please remember that your puppy must be treated with great care and protected from danger. Shield Kennels assumes no responsibility for any medical expenses incurred after the sale. Buyer is required to activate the free trial of Trupanion insurance the day before or the day of. This insurance is to help cover issues after you take the puppy home. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to activate on those days. Puppies can get stressed on take home and if an issue arises, this will help with cost. Plus, remember, puppies get into everything.

For the health of Shield Kennels puppies, they are to be fixed after a year old and in females after their first heat. We do recommend closer to 2 years old after puberty for the best health benefits. Hormones play a crucial part in their growth and fixing too young has been known to cause hip and joint issues, cruciate ligament tears, incontinence (peeing when excited or scared as adults) and behavioral problems, like fear of storms and separation anxiety. If a dog that was spayed or neutered before a year (unless for a medically necessary procedure), the hips and elbows will not be guaranteed. Shield Kennels does support ovary-sparing spay in females and a vasectomy in males, and those procedures can be done at an early age.

This contract is written for the protection of both Shield Kennels and the buyer; however, it is primarily written to protect the health and general well-being of the puppy. The buyer agrees to all the Shield Kennels Policies.
